Sydney Metro West: Station & Precinct Pedestrian Modelling
SCT Consulting supported the multi-disciplinary Engineering Design Solutions team to develop the Concept and Stage 1 station and precinct designs for Sydney Metro West.
As the pedestrian planning lead and modellers for Westmead Interchange, our specialist team’s scope included design and operational advice, assessment and modelling for the new Sydney Metro West Station; the upgrade of the existing Sydney Trains station; provision of a new bus interchange, as well integration with the Parramatta Light Rail terminus.
In informing the design development for Westmead Interchange, the team provided planning commentary and analysis to inform the multi-criteria assessment for the station typology, operational strategy and the location of key infrastructure (internal and external to the station). A key deliverable was the development of traffic and pedestrian micro-simulation models for the station and surrounding precinct to assess effectiveness of the interchange to accommodate future customers.
In addition, we provided an ongoing Technical Reviewer role for pedestrian planning and modelling for other stations on the Sydney Metro West alignment, including development of the rolling-stock model to capture its impact on platform operations, ad-hoc advice to help identify and alleviate constraints or risks and confirming other pedestrian models produced are fit-for-purpose.
Collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team was a key success factor, to overcome conflicts and constraints and deliver an efficient, comfortable and value-for-money solution. This involved close engagement with key stakeholders, including Sydney Trains and others within Sydney Metro, to help agree and alleviate operational risks, and working groups with other disciplines to determine best-for-project solutions.
