Oxford Street Cycleway
City of Sydney has proposed a new bidirectional cycleway along Oxford Street between Flinders Street and Wentworth Street, and along Liverpool Street to Castlereagh Street. Currently more than 2,000 cyclists utilise this corridor every weekday, a figure that exceeds the Harbour Bridge at approximately 1,800 per day. This cycleway would run through a mixed-use corridor with numerous bus services and high volumes of general traffic, and thus the impacts to these services must be considered in the assessment of the cycleway.
SCT Consulting was engaged to carry out detailed microsimulation modelling of the corridor to understand the existing and future performance of public transport and general traffic. The model extended along Oxford Street and Liverpool Street as well as adjacent corridors such as Anzac Parade and Wentworth Avenue. Our assessment considered multiple proposed alignments of the cycleway; impacts on the on-time running of major bus routes; as well as the impact of on-street parking and loading bays along Oxford Street on road network operations whilst balancing the needs of local businesses on the corridor.
Our team continued to work collaboratively with Transport for NSW and the City of Sydney to iteratively refine the model to address continually changing stakeholder concerns, ensuring an outcome was realistic reflection of real world conditions amidst changing travel demand due to COVID-19 and policy changes.
